Eternal Life Through Christ

“And this is life eternal, that they might know thee, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.” (John 3:17)

Christ’s words are not only a beautiful sentiment but are certainly a guiding principle for our faith and understanding of eternal life. In these words, we find the essence of what we know brings eternal life: to know God, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom He has sent. This knowing is not just an intellectual understanding but a deep, personal relationship with Heavenly Father. It is through this relationship that we find purpose, meaning, and the pathway to eternal life.

“Knowing” the only true God is more than just knowing about Him; it is experiencing His presence in our lives. It is feeling the Spirit testify of the reality to our soul. Heavenly Father knows and loves each one of us individually. To know Him is to cultivate a personal relationship through prayer, scripture study, and following the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

This verse also helps us have a better understanding of the role of Jesus Christ as the one sent by the Father. Jesus Christ is our Saviour and Redeemer, the central figure in the plan of salvation. Through His Atonement, we can be forgiven of our sins and return to live with Heavenly Father. To know Jesus Christ is to understand His role in our lives and to follow His teachings and example.

Eternal life does not simply mean living forever. It is the quality of life that God desires for all of His children. It is a life of joy, peace, and exaltation in His presence. Eternal life is not just a future state but a process that begins in mortality. It is a life of progression and growth, becoming more like our Heavenly Father. To have eternal life is to have the opportunity to live in God’s presence, to partake of His glory, and to continue progressing throughout eternity. It is the ultimate goal of our existence, made possible through the grace of Jesus Christ.

Jesus’ words in John 3:17 holds one of the core beliefs of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It teaches us that eternal life is found in knowing God and Jesus Christ, cultivating a personal relationship with them, and following their teachings. Through this knowledge and relationship, we find purpose, peace, and the pathway to eternal life.
